What is suspension & what does it do?

Your vehicle's suspension system is a series of components designed to work together to limit the vibrations and bumps from the road surface, providing a smooth, controlled, and comfortable driving experience.

The principal car suspension components include a coil spring and a shock absorber or, as it is sometimes known, a damper. These shocks and springs work together to dampen down and cushion the vehicle by absorbing the impact from potholes and other minor imperfections in the road. This keeps your vehicle stable and your tyres firmly in contact with the road surface for the maximum amount of time – which is essential for your brakes to work effectively. Worn shock absorbers can add up to 2 metres to your braking distance when travelling at 30mph as tyres have less contact with the road.

Maintaining a healthy vehicle suspension system is vital if you’re after the optimum comfort, stability and handling characteristics from your vehicle.

How do I know if my car suspension is bad?

It’s not always obvious that your vehicle has a suspension problem. Because their performance tends to decrease over time, you might not notice the difference. But some signs that your suspension needs looking at include:

  • A bumpier ride
  • Less responsive handling
  • Vehicle dipping at one corner
  • Unevenly worn tyres.

As soon as you know there’s a problem with your suspension, it’s advisable to get it fixed quickly. Driving with a broken suspension could, at best, cause more damage to your car in the long term – or, at worst, cause an accident due to the impact bad suspension has on car handling.
